Flip Your Script: How Positive Self-Talk Can Transform Your Fitness

March 26, 20252 min read

Have you ever caught yourself saying, “Ugh, this workout is gonna suck”? I hear it all the time.

I’ve coached for over twelve years, and let me tell you—how you speak to yourself is the biggest game-changer I’ve seen.

Whether you’re aiming to lose 20 pounds, climb a mountain, or just keep up with your grandkids on the soccer field, that little voice in your head matters. A lot.

We All Have That Inner Monologue

  • Sometimes it’s positive (“I got this!”).

  • Sometimes it’s negative (“I’m terrible at this…”).

  • And sometimes it’s downright nasty (“Why even bother?”).

It might sound like no big deal. But here’s the thing: that inner dialogue isn’t just noise. It’s a feedback loop that can shut you down or propel you forward.

Flip the Script

The moment I hear a client say, “This is going to be so hard,” I nudge them to reframe:

  • Instead of “I don’t want to do this,” try:
“This is going to help me get where I want to be.”

  • Instead of “This is going to suck,” say:
    “I can do hard things.”

  • Instead of “I’m terrible at this,” how about:
“I’m not great at this yet.

Small tweaks, huge difference.

Why It Works

Our brains latch on to the stories we tell. When we label something “too hard” or “not worth doing,” we make it true in our minds. But when we call it a challenge we can handle, our brains follow that lead. We get curious. We try a little harder.

Next Time You Catch Yourself

Pause. Ask:

“Is there a more uplifting way to say this?”

Even something like:

“I’ve got this,”
or
“I can’t wait to see what happens if I give it my best.”

Yes, it can feel cheesy at first. (I get it. You might roll your eyes.) But trust me, it’s a life-changing shift—in the gym and out.

Repeat it often enough, and it becomes second nature. You’ll start believing in your own potential, instead of slamming the door on it.

Remember This

  • Your words matter.

  • Your self-talk shapes your reality.

  • You can do hard things.

Switch up those phrases, watch your mindset evolve, and see how your workouts—and your life—transform.

Now, go crush that workout.
